Many children suffer from ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder). People with ADD/ADHD report: feelings of restlessness, lack of focus, forgetfulness too much energy at inappropriate times.
Dr. B has helped countless young people work through this common challenge with medication management and counseling. However, it’s become clear over time that adults also suffer from ADD/ADHD, having gone undiagnosed in childhood. Treatment is similar for adults although the context may be quite different.
To clarify, both ADHD and ADD sufferers have trouble concentrating; with ADHD, however, hyperactive symptoms (overly energetic, "bouncing off the walls," etc.) are included.
Anxiety disorders are essentially an unnecessary activation of the body’s fight-or-flight reaction. A troubling event, phrase, situation, even a negative thought may be the trigger. Then comes the symptoms: racing thoughts, a profound sense of worry, a tightness in the chest, and perhaps an undefined feeling of impending peril. Anxiety isn’t bad in and of itself - we all experience some degree of anxiety. But when it turns into constant worry and panic, anxiety crosses the line into a disorder.
Anxiety disorder manifests in a number of subtypes like social anxiety, back to school anxiety, or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Then there’s generalized anxiety disorder. Dr. Bregman has worked with all of them, helping patients overcome the uneasy feeling that arises when our thoughts get overbearing.
Bipolar, formerly known as “manic” depression, presents as polarized mood swings from depressive on one end, to overly-energetic, frenetic, and maybe even euphoric on the other. The depressive episodes feel like an extremely severe depression that can be almost paralyzing for sufferers. During manic episodes, destructive behaviors like impulse spending or reckless driving may occur.
It can be a scary disorder both for sufferers and their loved ones. Medication is often used in treatment, along with talk therapy. Clarity is possible with bipolar disorder as long as patients adhere to a treatment plan with a trusted psychiatrist.
Depression is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders in the world. In the US alone, over 17million adults have struggled with a depressive episode. It is characterized by feelings of hopelessness, lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and ongoing sadness that makes it hard to function. Life can feel pretty ‘gray’ if you have depression. In extreme cases depression may even lead to suicide.
The cause might be circumstantial or biological or both - but either way depression lowers quality of life. Like anxiety, depression takes many forms: general, seasonal, post-partum. Even grief can lead us to bouts of depression. In all cases, working with a good mental health professional can return the spring to your step and a sense of renewal to your life.
PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is common to survivors of traumatic experiences. Sufferers of PTSD may be
- easily startled
- experience disturbing flashbacks
- suffer from nightmares
- subject to aggressive outburs
- experience strained relationships due to the symptoms of this disorder
Many associate PTSD with military combat trauma or victims of violent crime, but it can also come about through more common events like witnessing an accident or the death of a loved one. It may seem like a steep hill to climb, but patients with PTSD can make it over into a brighter tomorrow. Counseling and medication management are often the formula to recovery with PTSD.
Substance Abuse Disorder
As the name implies, substance abuse disorder occurs when a patient can not stop using drugs or alcohol even though they have a detrimental effect on their life. Criteria for having the disorder include: cravings for the substance, being unable to stop using substances even though you want to stop, letting other activity fall by the wayside, damaged relationships due to substance use countless other life problems brought about by an inability to stop using drugs or alcohol.
Substance abuse is a growing concern in our society and Bregman Medical Group is ready to meet the challenge.
Psychological problems often affect the whole family. In these cases, it may become necessary to seek counseling together. Services such as conflict resolution, family grief counseling, and marriage counseling are sometimes necessary to keep balance within a family.
By receiving treatment as a family, relationships are improved and loved ones coordinate as a team to find solutions. Problems arise in most families and a mental health professional could be the key to love and happiness for years to come.
Children are our future, but their mental health can be fragile as they develop into adulthood. Disorders like ADD/ADHD and depression can develop into bigger problems if not treated in childhood, when people are more receptive to new ways of thinking and behaviors.
Bregman Medical Group provides kids with the tools needed to confront challenges with resilience. We also offer services for parents, because helping a child through mental health struggles can be a struggle in itself. Your children are important to you and to us, and we want to help.
